Running In A New Engine
The full power and maximum performance will not be available until the engine has been thoroughly run in, on account of bearings, etc., being a very accurate fit. As the machine is used, however, and bearings, etc. run in or bed down a progressive improvement will be noticeable.
For the first 500 miles at least full throttle driving should be avoided and the maximum speed should be kept below approximately 35 miles per hour. Avoid allowing the engine to pull hard on a large throttle opening as when going up hill, but make full use of the gearbox so as to ease the load on the engine. Short bursts of speed may be indulged in increasing the speed and duration as the mileage increases. It is in fact beneficial to vary the speed as much as possible during the running in period. An engine is usually quite free after about 1000 miles.
