Adjustment Of Steering Head Bearings
The front wheel must be clear of the floor when checking and readjusting. A block of wood under the crankcase is suitable as support.
To remove play from the bearings, slacken off the top cross member clamp bolt nut (illustration page 30) and tighten down the column lock nut until the steering column has no play at all and becomes slightly stiff. Next slack off the lock-nut until freedom is obtained without play. The final adjustment must allow the front wheel and fork assembly to fall to either side with its own weight. Retighten the clamp bolt nut.
After very long use the column may turn with a " lumpy " feeling after the adjustment has been made. If so this indicates that the head races have become pitted and the steering head must be dismantled and the worn parts replaced. See Service Manual.
