Adjusting The Front Brake
The knurled screw and locking ring are fitted to the front brake plate, or on earlier machines, to the fork girder near the front bottom spindle. Undo the locking nut and screw up the knurled adjuster until the correct adjustment has been obtained and then lock up the locking nut. After prolonged use, if the limit of adjustment has been reached, thin packing pieces may be inserted between the steel slippers on the ends of the brake shoes and the shoes. These pieces can be cut easily from a piece of ordinary thin tin plate.
On machines fitted with a rigid brake rod between the cable and the cam lever, the adjustment is obtained by screwing the adjusting nut at the bottom further up the rod to compensate for wear on the brake liners.
